The Cockpit Country hosts the highest number (27 of 28) of endemic landbirds: the black-billed streamertail is the only species not found here.

Some references list thirty endemic birds for Jamaica, with the optimistic hope that remnant individual Jamaican Petrels (Pterodroma caribbaea) and Poorwills (Siphonorhis americanus) might be discovered in remote parts. Since, however, neither of these birds has been observed for over a hundred years and they disappeared within a few years of the intentional introduction of the Indian Mongoose (Herpestes auropunctatis), many guides only list the twenty eight endemics which are known to be present.
