Viewing this page really requires a browser capable of displaying frames.but you can get to the
contents
of the site by using the links below. This site is intended to be a resource base for researchers students communities and others interested in the
Cockpit Country
area of Jamaica, West Indies. It is maintained by
Windsor Research Centre
, located at
Windsor Great House
and situated three miles inside the perimeter road which encircles the Cockpit Country (see
Map
) The Centre has been receiving researchers studying the
flora
, fauna and
geology
of the area since at least 1920 and is presently being developed by the owner to facilitate researchers in this hotspot of
biodiversity
and to encourage conservation of this unique
karst
environment by education and provision of alternate livelihood strategies for the
communities
located around the Cockpit Country. We have participated in the Steering Committee for the National Park proposal sponsored by The World Bank and resident biologist, Dr Susan Koenig, was the Biodiversity Specialist for the Project Proposal. We would like to encourage you to learn more about our
Invertebrates
,
Herpetofauna
(amphibians and reptiles),
Birds
,
Mammals
, (especially the
Chiroptera
or bats) and to see how endemic flora and fauna are being affected by
non-native species
. We also think that the unique karst landscape may interest you and have included information on the formation of
Jamaica
and of the
Cockpit Country
, together with some info and warnings on
Caves
. Of course, most of this info came from the literature and we include a
bibliography
and book-store section. We include
rainfall data
and climate information and a number of pages covering cultural heritage sites such as the
Maroon
village of Accompong (see
map
) and places where you can find
accommodation
.
