Jamaican cuckoos, just like Old World cuckoos, are from the family Cuculidae, but are not brood parasites. The Jamaican Lizard Cuckoo is locally known as "Old woman rain bird" and can often be seen, creeping slowly through the understorey or in branches overhead, feeding on a wide range of animal matter, ranging from insects to lizards.

Like all of Jamaica's endemic wildlife, it is protected by the Wildlife Protection Act.
